Position Summary

The Institute of Contemporary Arts at NYU Shanghai is a non-profit kunsthalle and research center committed to the development, presentation, and exchange of diverse ideas through contemporary arts. As the university art gallery of NYU Shanghai, the ICA pursues biennial artistic research programs through public exhibitions, events, and publications that experiment with ways of knowing, being, and relating to ourselves and the world.

 

The Curatorial Assistant will report directly to the Director/Curator and will be supervised by the Assistant Curator.  They provide curatorial and administrative support on all aspects of the ICA at NYU Shanghai’s programs and operations.

 

The position is an opportunity for an emerging cultural worker to develop their career within the non-profit gallery and museum sector, acquire a wide range of skills and experience associated with the programming and operation of a university art gallery, and gain a comprehensive knowledge of working within both a small organization and large institution.  The position begins in mid- to late August 2020.  For more information about the ICA at NYU Shanghai, visit our website: ica.shanghai.nyu.edu

 

The main responsibilities include:

Administrative (60%)

  • Manage all accounts payable, including requisitions and payment requests, expense reports, etc.;
  • Coordinates logistical needs for director/curator, collaborators, and guests, including travel and event-related logistics;
  • Manage gallery calendar and assist in managing director/curator’s calendar;
  • Manage incoming/outgoing phone calls, e-mails, and correspondence;
  • Maintain filing system;
  • Source and acquire gallery equipment and supplies;
  • Prepare and process documents, including reports, administrative forms, and presentations;
  • Organize and attend meetings, take minutes, and distribute minutes.

 

Curatorial (30%)

  • Support collaborators and guests with research of local vendors and potential collaborators;
  • Provide on-site support during installations/deinstallations;
  • Oversee maintenance of exhibitions between opening and closing;
  • Assist with public program event preparation and logistics;
  • Coordinate documentation of public programs, including post-event editing, transcription, translation, proofreading, and subtitling;
  • Assist in gathering and securing information, texts, and images for publication;
  • Assist with translating, and proofreading aspects of publications;
  • Distribute publications to participants, contributors, lenders, etc..

 

Communications/Other (10%)

  • Assist in preparing and executing exhibition and event-related publicity and marketing initiatives;
  • Assist with composing, translating, and proofreading any and all public communications;
  • Draft, edit, and manage content on ICA at NYU Shanghai website;
  • Serve as gallery reception as needed;
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required;
  • Master's Degree in Art History, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies or related discipline preferred.

 

Required Experience

  • 1-2 years previous administrative experience in a museum, gallery, or university required;
  • Working knowledge of contemporary art, art history, and theory preferred.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional and social intelligence;
  • Demonstrated skill in organization and rigorous attention to detail;
  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and collaboratively;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated research and writing skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously;
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion;
  • Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in Mandarin and English.
