Position Summary

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) Specialist for Academic Skills oversees the recruitment, training, mentoring, evaluation, and professional development of Writing & Speaking Learning Assistants (WSLAs), who provide peer tutoring services to students in English writing, speaking, reading, and listening. The Specialist also partners with faculty and academic advisors to design and facilitate targeted workshops focused on academic skills and English language proficiency, responsible and ethical use of AI, and essential study and interpersonal academic skills. Additionally, they leverage data-driven insights to optimize ARC operations. They also manage the operational logistics of the exam accommodations process. Additionally, the Specialist serves as a key campus partner by promoting ARC services, representing the ARC on University committees, and supporting major institutional events such as student orientations and department fairs.

 

The main responsibilities include: 

Training & Supervision - 40%

  • Recruit and hire qualified Writing & Speaking Learning Assistants (WSLAs), and implement training and evaluation for WSLAs.
  • Deliver onboarding and ongoing training for WSLAs on relevant University policies, office procedures, and tutoring strategies.
  • Develop and improve training materials, including selected readings, WSLA manual and handbook, and training modules.
  • Develop learning outcomes and assessments to support WSLAs' professional development and continuous program improvement.
  • Coordinate and conduct the observation and feedback process for WSLA tutoring sessions to strengthen WSLA skills and students’ learning experience.
  • Meet individually with students seeking writing, speaking, reading, listening, and academic support, as needed, and provide the necessary support or make appropriate referrals.
  • Develop community-building events for WSLAs and other ARC student workers.

Exam Accommodations Coordination - 30%

  • Outreach to faculty members to collect and clarify exam instructions, reserve testing rooms, coordinate proctor assignments, and communicate with faculty, students, and proctors about exam arrangements.

 

Academic Skills Coaching and Academic Programming - 20%

  • Collaborate with academic advisors to develop and improve academic workshops on study and interpersonal skills.
  • Design and facilitate workshops to enhance students’ proficiency in the English language and other academic skills in the era of Generative AI.
  • Collaborate with faculty, academic advisors, and ARC staff to identify unmet academic needs and develop effective resources (e.g., workshops, tutorials, special events).

Office Administration - 10%

  • Create and modify online WSLAs’ tutoring schedules.
  • Develop and implement systems to track student use of ARC resources, faculty and student satisfaction, and student performance and improvement; analyze, interpret, and respond to data to inform strategic planning for ARC operations.
  • Develop and coordinate activities to promote and publicize ARC services.
  • Perform staff duties during Student Orientation, Candidate Weekends, Department Fairs, and other events throughout the year. This may occasionally require work during school breaks and on some weekends and evenings.
  • Represent the ARC on University committees, as needed.
  • Proctor exams as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree in TESOL, education, educational psychology, instruction and learning, higher education, counseling, or a closely related field preferred.

Required Experience 

  • Minimum 1-3 years’ experience working in academic support, learning center, advising, teaching, or similar secondary or post-secondary educational setting.
  • Teaching, tutoring, and/or mentoring/coaching experience.
  • Experience studying and working in a multicultural environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Superb ability to prioritize among projects and multitask.
  • Excellent attention to detail.  
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team.
