Position Summary

About the Office of Undergraduate Admissions

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at NYU Shanghai manages the recruitment and enrollment of both Chinese and international students. As NYU’s global campus in China, NYU Shanghai is home to a diverse undergraduate population of 2,000 students from over 70 countries and regions. The office plays a central role in attracting students who reflect the university’s academic excellence, global outlook, and core values.

The Assistant Director, Undergraduate Admissions is a member of NYU Shanghai’s undergraduate admissions team. This role supports recruitment, evaluation, and yield efforts primarily for prospective Chinese students, while also contributing to shared office-wide initiatives that support all applicant populations. The Assistant Director will be involved in school outreach, application review, event coordination, and admissions communications. The role includes travel within Mainland China and occasional international travel. As part of a collaborative and integrated admissions office, the Associate works closely with colleagues across both the Chinese and international admissions tracks to help deliver a seamless and student-centered admissions experience.
 

The main responsibilities include:

 

Outreach and Recruitment (40%)

  • Travel to assigned regions in Mainland China to promote NYU Shanghai and recruit prospective students;

  • Conduct in-person and virtual information sessions, high school visits, workshops, and campus tours;

  • Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with key regional stakeholders, including high school counselors and local education authorities;

  • Represent NYU Shanghai at school fairs, conferences, and other recruitment events;

  • Plan and manage outreach logistics, travel, and data tracking for assigned territories;

  • Participate in occasional international recruitment travel as needed;

  • Collaborate with colleagues across both the Chinese and international admissions tracks to align messaging, strategy, and engagement. 

Evaluation and Selection (30%)

  • Review undergraduate applications from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, and support application review for other international territories as needed;

  • Develop familiarity with regional grading systems and examination policies;

  • Support transcript processing and documentation review;

  • Support the maintenance and operation of information systems for the Chinese admissions, quota allocation and matriculation processes;

  • Participate in training and calibration to ensure consistency in evaluation practices across applicant populations;

  • Engage with the campus community to deepen understanding of the student experience and the qualities that contribute to success at NYU Shanghai. 

Communications, Operations, and Administration (30%)

  • Respond to inquiries from prospective students and families via phone, email, and online platforms;

  • Assist with matriculation tasks, including document collection, data entry, and communication with admitted students;

  • Maintain accurate records in the CRM and other admissions systems used by both teams;

  • Support communications and marketing efforts, including student ambassador programs and cross-team outreach initiatives;

  • Contribute to the planning and execution of Candidate Weekend, Admitted Student Weekend, and other major admissions events and activities;

  • Assist with the daily operations of the Admissions Welcome Center;

  • Provide general administrative support and participate in team meetings and professional development with both Chinese and international colleagues.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

Required Experience

  • Experience in higher education, admissions, or student services preferred;

  • Familiarity with Chinese and/or international education systems is a plus.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Native Mandarin speaker with fluency in English; strong written, verbal, and presentation skills in both languages;

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; service-oriented mindset;

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-cultural and bilingual team environment;

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, detail-oriented setting;

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with CRM or admissions systems (e.g., Slate) is a plus;

  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
