NYU Shanghai is seeking qualified and enthusiastic graduate students to serve as Teaching Assistants in the 2025 Summer Chinese Immersion Program. Combining rigorous language instruction with rich cultural immersion, the program is set in the dynamic city of Shanghai, where the blend of a storied past and cosmopolitan present provides abundant opportunities for linguistic and cultural exploration.
Our student cohort is diverse and highly selective, comprising one-third NYU Shanghai students, one-third from NYU’s New York and Abu Dhabi campuses, and one-third from peer institutions. Program Duration

Working Hours and Location

- This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). Typical working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., 1:30-3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with some evening office hours (7:00-9:00 pm) and occasional weekend duties as required.
- Working Location:
- NYU Shanghai Qiantan Campus and NYU Shanghai dormitory, as well as occasional field trips to sites in and outside of Shanghai.
Job Responsibilities
- Teaching & Academic Support
- Observe morning classes (8:30 a.m.–10:20 a.m., Mon-Fri) to align drill sessions with curriculum;
- Teach two 50-minute drill sessions daily (10:30 a.m.–12:20 p.m., Mon-Fri);
- Provide 2 hours of one-on-one instruction (1:30 p.m.– 3:30 p.m., Tue/Wed/Thu);
- Hold evening office hours (7:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., twice a week) at the dorms;
- Attend group class preparation meetings, 2-3 times a week;
- Grade students’ assignments and assessments under the guidance of lead instructors;
- Document and regularly report students’ performance and learning progress to instructors.
- Co-curricular Activities Engagement & Program Support
- Design and lead one language activity during the program;
- Host a weekly Chinese Language Table lunch with students;
- Support weekly cultural and language activities;
- Chaperone Friday field trips and occasional weekend excursions, as needed and assigned;
- Conduct pre-trip site visits to assess safety, accessibility, and educational value of field trip locations, as needed and assigned;
- Assist with program-level events (inter-program speech contest, opening/closing ceremonies, etc), as needed and assigned;
- Enforce the Language Pledge policy by encouraging and ensuring that students speak only in Chinese at all times.
