Position Summary

The Director of Campus Safety at NYU Shanghai plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors within the university’s premises. As the head of the Campus Safety department, the Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety and emergency management protocols and infrastructure that aligns with the institution’s mission to foster a supportive and multicultural academic environment.

 

The Director leads a team of professional staff and collaborates with university stakeholders, law enforcement agencies, and community partners to create a secure campus environment. This includes establishing robust communication channels for safety alerts, training programs for students and staff, and fostering a culture of awareness and preparedness.

 

The Director of Campus Safety at NYU Shanghai is a vital part of fostering a safe, inclusive, and globally oriented educational environment. The ideal candidate will exemplify exceptional professionalism, cultural competence, and a forward-thinking approach to campus safety in an international academic institution.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and oversee comprehensive safety and security programs for the entire NYU Shanghai campus and community, including but not limited to emergency preparedness, risk management, and crisis response planning.
  • Supervise a team of campus safety personnel, including contractors, ensuring proper training, performance, and professionalism in daily operations.
  • Ensure lean, efficient, and robust operations of safety practices and programs within a restricted budget frame. 
  • Collaborate with university leadership, local law enforcement, and external security agencies to ensure adherence to legal standards and effective coordination in safety matters in Shanghai, China, and the NYU Global Network.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments of campus facilities and recommend improvements to enhance safety measures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local and global regulations on campus safety, and ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and protocols.
  • Closely work with university leadership and other internal stakeholders and clients to foster safety protocols in a service oriented manner. Lead and coordinate safety awareness programs, workshops, and training sessions for the university community.
  • Manage emergency incidents effectively, serving as the primary point of contact for critical situations and post-incident evaluation.
  • Other relevant responsibilities as assigned by the university leadership.

Qualifications

Educational Background:

  • A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, emergency management, or a related field is required.
  • A master’s degree or advanced qualification in a relevant area is strongly preferred.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to engage with a diverse and international community.
  • In-depth understanding of security management, crisis response strategies, and emergency preparedness.
  • Familiarity with Chinese safety and security regulations, as well as global best practices in campus safety.
  • Proficiency in both English and Mandarin.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations, make sound decisions under pressure, and manage resource allocation effectively.

 

Professional Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in security management, law enforcement, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Prior experience in an educational or campus environment, particularly in an international setting, is preferred.
