Position Summary

The Specialist for Communications and Strategic Initiatives will be responsible for supporting various communications-related affairs and strategic initiatives within the Office of Graduate and Advanced Education (OGAE). The OGAE promotes education beyond the undergraduate level at NYU Shanghai by overseeing the formation and management of programs offering master’s, professional, and doctoral degrees, plus other non-degree programs. At all times, he/she will need to be an effective advocate for graduate education within the NYU Shanghai community and embody the standard of excellence the university expects of its graduate initiatives.

 

The successful candidate will join the university during a time of significant anticipated growth in the OGAE and will have the opportunity to contribute in an impactful way to NYU Shanghai’s continued effort to become a leader in Chinese and international higher education.

The main responsibilities include:

 

  • Develop and promote the adoption of best practices for the presentation, promotion, and organization of OGAE information, programs, and stories;
  • Maintain consistency of style, quality, and language for OGAE communications, branding, and content;
  • Lead OGAE social media, web management, and analytics, promote the use and spread of advanced features, technologies, and webtools / apps;
  • Brainstorm innovative ways of telling OGAE stories and communicating / memorializing / augmenting OGAE impact;
  • Facilitate synergies and partnerships with University Communications department;
  • Produce media reports, research briefings, and assist with bilingual projects pertaining to graduate education;
  • Write feature articles in English and Chinese about OGAE programs, students, and faculty to be published on communications channels;
  • Conduct due diligence on new OGAE faculty candidates
  • Make recommendations on quotes and speech content for the OGAE Dean;
  • Take lead on drafting OGAE Annual Report
  • Establish and supervise a pool of freelance contributing writers, photographers, videographers, and translators;
  • Lead photography / videography / streaming projects of OGAE programs, students, and faculty;
  • Track / monitor mass media for news and discussion relating to OGAE;
  • Develop marketing creative, such as visual, graphic design, digital and print branding, swag;
  • Contribute to the organization and planning of key OGAE events;
  • Remain abreast of competitive marketplace trends and benchmark similar programs and activities. Represent the OGAE and build new connections. Uphold a constant attitude of seeking ways to advance, develop, and improve the OGAE;
  • Be responsive to issues of general concern that apply to all NYU Shanghai graduate programs. Act as a steward of the combined best interests and initiator of discussion for the matters that are critical to all graduate programs. Be available for periodic assignments and projects that may pertain to all graduate programs. Be responsive to the needs of students, faculty, and administration in all facets of work. Make recommendations to leadership;
  • Work with OGAE Senior Manager of Operations and Administration on special projects that pertain to OGAE advancement and development;
  • Other related responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Dean of Graduate and Advanced Education. This position may also evolve in accordance with growth in the OGAE and with the Specialist’s own creativity, initiative, and interests.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, graduate degree preferred. Previous major in media, communications, or related fields highly valued;
  • Study abroad experience highly valued.

Required Experience

  • Working experience in international education highly valued;
  • Working experience in media, communications, or related fields highly valued;
  • Prior experience with journalism, writing for print and / or social media highly valued;
  • Prior experience with photography and / or videography highly valued.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to align one’s own goals with the strategic direction of an institution, understanding and supporting the institutional values while also thinking creatively about institutional problem-solving;
  • Demonstrated ability to be forward-thinking and to take initiative, anticipating implications and consequences and identifying actions before situations require them;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently in a cross-cultural environment, developing effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders;
  • Highly attuned detail orientation with strong sense of personal integrity and responsibility;
  • Ability to write articles fluently in both English and Mandarin, going beyond mere translations to produce original content that reads as native in either language;
  • Strong story-telling, interviewing, and research skills;
  • Strong sense for the subtleties behind adapting a marketing strategy and / or a communication to different audiences;
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, work under pressure, and meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability to show concern and sensitivity for understanding the needs of customers and identifying how to satisfy them;
  • Native fluency in Chinese and proficiency in English required, with excellent speaking, writing, proofreading, and editing skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications, Google Docs/Apps, other database applications and Internet research;
  • Working knowledge of web and social media tools highly valued.
